My food and jewellery videos

I started making video on our traditional food in my native language in Tamil. I give lot of tips while making, because I intend people who are just learning cooking to benefit from those tips.. Just like I am passionate about our traditional jewellery I am equally passionate about our traditional food which is full of nutrition and some medicinal values.

The food is traditional but not prepared in the traditional way, because then that would mean that I have lot of open spaces where we can put all our vessels and stoves.

After all what can we leave to the next generation other than History?
Very soon I will be uploading many videos on jewellery making; all types of jewellery making and stories.. Watch out...

This particular food video has been getting lot of views lately and I am wondering what must be the reason.

Jewellery workshop in London

I love to share to knowledge and also meet new people. It is always nice to see their reactions after they have made jewellery. They usually are so happy about it.

I conducted a jewellery workshop on Friday and they were so happy that they gave amazing feedback.

Instagram - did not have choice

I am not a social media person. I love to meet people and exchange ideas, information etc.

When I heard about facebook, was perplexed. How can that be possible. I was in touch with all friends.  I did not need facebook.

But when I started "Myidentityforwomen", I realized I need some medium to reach out to people to tell them what we do.

Facebook helped a lot to reach to people.
But now that I am here in London with my own jewellery brand "Carline Perulla", I needed another medium to post the pictures of my jewellery as and when I make.

If you use technology as needed then it is indeed a boon.

And here is the account https://www.instagram.com/carlineperulla/

Jewellery at the Gallery - A lifetime experience

As I wrote earlier, was so surprised about my jewellery winning the entry into the Laura I Gallery.

What to say about the event?
It was packed and there was tremendous response from people.

It was a strange feeling when people came to my place and asked about my jewellery, my inspirations and my interpretation of the jewellery.

There was a beautiful camaraderie among artists, though we have never met before.
Lovely evening.

Last minute jewellery

Usually Murphy's law will always work 100% for me.

How much ever I plan, things will go haywire. In one way, it is good, because I have learned to expect it and accept it.

I wanted to wear something new and different for the Gallery exhibition where they are going to showcase my jewellery. I know it is a life time chance and I am really lucky and grateful to God for this blessing. First confusion, what dress to wear (The dressing culture is totally different to what we wear in India))
Second, what do I wear for jewellery? :(

To be honest, after learning to make jewellery, I lost all interest in wearing them. ( Am I crazy?, I am from India)

For the past one week, been doodling designs. Tried many, wasted some materials. And at last made this, this morning.

Actually it looks more beautiful in person, and I feel, photos dont do justice.
Sterling silver with gold plated, silver leaf and amazing Amethyst rocks.
Will post images from the Gallery tomorrow.

I dont know about others, I am feeling very nervous about this whole thing in the evening.

A dream come true - My jewellery to be displayed in the Gallery

Everyone likes recognition and applause.

I have been doing jewellery for the past 10 years, and all the time, I feel only that I am admiring it.

In Tamil, they have a saying. I am translating it. It goes like this, "The crow always thinks that its baby is gold"

May be because I made it, I am admiring it always. Sometimes the piece that I like the most does not sell.

I always wondered. Why people are not buying this, and I have been searching for that customer who will buy the jewellery that I always loved.

So that I can connect with them immediately. It has still not happened. Well not in a way that I expected.

But today, I think I have got my share of cake.

I sent three pieces to the competition at the last moment. I did not know about the competition till the last two days.

But then I thought, let me try. And what happened, today I get a mail telling that my jewellery has been selected for the finals to be displayed in the Gallery. What an overwhelming feeling and full of happiness. I am still not out of it. So grateful to God, for showering his blessings.  I am singing and dancing.

Thought will share with all of you'll.

Enameled Pendant

I love colors and I so I loved the concept of enameling on jewellery. But I never thought, that it would take so many years to become confident in it.
I have been practicing enamelling for seven years, and everytime it has been a lesson.
To do enamel, you also need to know a bit of silversmithing. So at first you have master silversmithing and then do decent silver pieces and then apply vitreous enamels on it.
I have never shied from trying anything, telling its difficult. But this is one I think it is.
Preparing the design in silver, choosing colours( each company's colour will differ after firing) enamelling, ..

Village jewellery

Paambadam Jewellery.

I have been searching for this jewellery for many years. Because these are worn by women that are more than 70 years of age generally. Very rare to find women in the city wearing this. And only in certain villages you can find these women.
A very complicated design and the ear lobes grows larger as years pass by. I heard that a leaf is inserted inside the earlobes when they are small kids and as the leaf expands this hole also grows big and then they start wearing this. (I am not sure, secondary information)

Not sure about the scientific reason behind wearing this jewellery, but I believe that there must one.

This is a painting of a friend who posted on facebook yesterday. And it was so beautiful, both the painting and the "Paati" ( this is how we call old women)

Stamped copper bracelet

This piece has been pending for a long time. Stamped and textured in copper, interwoven with Turquoise beads and then finished with a brass clasp.

Old vintage like. I love it. Sometimes I think, its crazy to love your own jewellery. But what to do, as a creator, I have to love mine first.:)

Scoop Fashion show last week

Wow, what can I describe about the event. The famous Scoop Fashion show. Period.

I booked the show, and this is the first time I am attending a show with such magnitude.

Printed the tickets and went to the 'Saatchi Gallery' in the Duke of York's HQ

The area itself is in the centre of London. And this is the first time for me there.

What can I say? Totally in awe seeing the world famous brands and emerging designers showcased there.

Lovely womenswear, menswear, jewellery, shoes, watches...

The display and the setup screamed class.

I even loved the way the designers'  labels were written on the wall. With a lovely, clear font.

Many stalls had designers with their sketchbook or design book, discussing with people.

I just went around not knowing what to do, but just admiring the beauty of the clothes and jewellery displayed.

Next week, I am attending another show called "Pure London" and I am so excited because I think I will be seeing the catwalk for the first time.

Love fashion!

My calm and cute Buddha

Recently I bought some carved Buddha beads. The calmness of the face and the smile made me so mesmerized. I keep looking at the face and I can a feel a strange sense of calmness within me.

I wanted to do jewellery out of it. But was really breaking my head for a design.
Then I designed this which I feel is unique. I used semi precious Agate beads and wood beads. I did a texture behind the Buddha to make the Buddha more prominent.

Rudhraksam - the protector bead

Rudhraksham is a seed that is got from a tree that are found in Himalayas. The Rudraksham is used extensively in India, especially in South India. In Sanskrit it is called Rudraksa and it means Shiva's third eye.
Raksham means protection in Tamil (a language that is widely spoken in TamilNadu)
Sages and all Sanyasis wear this mala.

Spiritually inclined people or people who are into spirituality generally wear this bead strung on a thread. It can be a single bead or a string of beads.

There are also facets in this bead, which is considered very important. Beads with a single facet is very expensive and very powerful.

In South India, especially in my state TamilNadu, men and women that embark on a pilgrimage will defintely wear this. Why?

Because it is believed that it protects you from all negative things that occurs during travel. It is also believed that since it is closely worn at the neck, in fact the base of the throat, when you inhale it is supposed to purify the air.

Rudhraksham is generally strung with silver in between because in TamilNadu we believe that silver and gold is above everything in the context of purity. That is why you will find all pooja materials in temples will be in either silver or brass.

I personally had an experience picking these Rudhraksham beads from Lalbagh garden in Bangalore, Karnataka.

I recently visited my favourite temple in Trichy, Rockfort temple, where they sell huge strands of this mala. I am planning to make simple jewellery with this, so bought many strands from the temple.
The shop owner was so pleased that I am writing about Rudhraksham beads. We are conversing in our native language Tamil. He also asked me to film the Shiva idols because Lord Shiva wears Rudhraksham beads.

The video of the Rudhraksham strings that were displayed in the Temple can be found at

Jewellery private view

Did a private view of the jewellery that we designed. Long time dream come true.

Generally when I say that I am from India, people think that I am importing jewellery from there and selling it here in London.

Then I had to explain that it is all handmade in Britain.

Good response and we had a nice get-together.

Silver leaves and gem beads

I dont know about other jewellery makers, but I am not able to complete one jewellery fully at a time.

I keep putting all the ones that need to be filed separately, polished separately, finished separately, but at the end I dont have any completed jewellery!

Which makes me frustrated at times because when I think I have made many pieces a day, and I am so satisfied with my outcome, end result - I dont see anything ready for a photograph!

And when my hubby comes back from office, I have a sheepish smile.

That is why, I always end up in putting less jewellery on the website.:)

But yesterday was a different day.

I finished four leaves, filed them, polished them, put Tourmaline, Aquamarine, Turqoise and Amethyst beads and surprise!!!! I had them ready for photograph at night!

And remember all four are different. They are not casted pieces but handmade with love and passion.

So here it is
